چکیده

The San Joaquin kit fox (Vulpes macrotis mutica; SJKF) is federally endangered due to profound habitat loss. A population of SJKF occurs in the urban environment city Bakersfield, California, and may be important for conservation. We conducted a systematic survey using automated camera stations occupancy analysis identify suitable Bakersfield estimate conceptual carrying capacity environment. identified high, medium, low suitability totaling 121 km2, 196 40 respectively. Based on mean home range size 0.78 km2 an assumption two adults high ranges one adult medium ranges, we estimated 561 foxes. This seems plausible as number was 381 2015, foxes already had been reduced by sarcoptic mange epidemic that began years earlier. would increase range-wide much 38%. Adult density estimates derived based (1.57/km2) (2.56/km2) were higher than natural habitats. substantial therefore could contribute significantly conservation recovery efforts SJKF. Given our results, potential strategy encourage or even establish additional populations.

Coyote Control to Protect Endangered San Joaquin Kit Foxes at the Naval Petroleum Reserves, California

We investigated the effectiveness of a coyote (Canis latrans) control program implemented to increase numbers of endangered San Joaquin kit foxes (Vulpes macrotis mutica) at the Naval Petroleum Reserves in California (NPRC). Between 1980 and 1985, the kit fox population on NPRC declined approximately 66% while coyote abundance apparently increased. Coyote predation was identified as the primary...

Movements and Habitat Use of an Endangered Snake, Hoplocephalus bungaroides (Elapidae): Implications for Conservation

A detailed understanding of how extensively animals move through the landscape, and the habitat features upon which they rely, can identify conservation priorities and thus inform management planning. For many endangered species, information on habitat use either is sparse, or is based upon studies from a small part of the species' range. The broad-headed snake (Hoplocephalus bungaroides) is re...

Comparison of Flea (Siphonaptera) Burdens on the Endangered San Joaquin Kit Fox (Vulpes macrotis mutica (Carnivora, Canidae)) Inhabiting Urban and Nonurban Environments in Central Valley, California.

The San Joaquin kit fox (Vulpes macrotis mutica Merriam (Carnivora, Canidae)) is an endangered small carnivore endemic to the San Joaquin Valley of California. Commercial and agricultural land expansion has contributed to the species' decline and invasion of more cosmopolitan species, providing means for potential ecological shifts in disease vector and host species. Fleas are common ectoparasi...

Habitat fragmentation is associated to gut microbiota diversity of an endangered primate: implications for conservation

The expansion of agriculture is shrinking pristine forest areas worldwide, jeopardizing the persistence of their wild inhabitants. The Udzungwa red colobus monkey (Procolobus gordonorum) is among the most threatened primate species in Africa. Primarily arboreal and highly sensitive to hunting and habitat destruction, they provide a critical model to understanding whether anthropogenic disturban...
